Lake Erie is a major freshwater body that borders the province of Ontario in Canada, as well as the U.S. states of New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Michigan. The Canadian and U.S. shorelines feature a diverse mix of communities ranging from scenic rural towns and industrial ports to resort destinations and recreational hubs.
New York
Buffalo (anchors the eastern end of the lake) is New York’s major lakefront city, serving as a central hub for industry and commerce along the lake. Nearby settlements include Lackawanna, Hamburg (a town), Silver Creek, Dunkirk, and Westfield (home to the Barcelona Lighthouse), forming the eastern New York section of Lake Erie’s shoreline.
Pennsylvania
Erie stands as Pennsylvania’s only Great Lakes port city and is home to Presque Isle State Park. This Pennsylvania contribution to the lake’s shoreline also includes smaller communities like North East (a town), Lake City, and Girard, which together form the Pennsylvania border along Lake Erie.
Ohio
Ohio’s Lake Erie shoreline features numerous communities, from Conneaut and Ashtabula to Geneva-on-the-Lake (a classic strip of vintage cottages, wineries, and family resorts), Fairport Harbor (known for its lakefront park and historic lighthouses), Mentor, Eastlake, Cleveland (the largest U.S. city on the lake), Lorain, Vermilion, Huron, and Sandusky (renowned for the Cedar Point amusement park). The Ohio section also includes Port Clinton, Oak Harbor, Oregon (suburb of Toledo), and Toledo (which anchors the western end of the lake).
Michigan
The Michigan shoreline along Lake Erie includes Luna Pier and Monroe, which complete the list of Great Lakes border communities for this state. These settlements represent Michigan’s portion of Lake Erie’s eastern shorelines.
Canada (Ontario)
On the Canadian Ontario side, many settlements are smaller harbor towns, villages, and regional cities due to the scenic rural expanses and agricultural belts of the north shore. Notable communities include Fort Erie (home to Crystal Beach and the Peace Bridge), Port Colborne (known for its picturesque canals), Port Maitland, Dunnville, Port Dover (famous for its sandy beaches and summer motorcycle culture), Port Ryerse and Normandale, Turkey Point and Long Point (known for extensive provincial park lands, a massive 25 mile beach and birding), Port Burwell (features a historic lighthouse and a popular beach), Port Bruce, Port Stanley (a vibrant, dreamy beach town), Port Glasgow, Erieau, Wheatley, and Leamington (Canada’s southernmost town, gateway to Point Pelee National Park). Other Ontario settlements include Kingsville, Colchester, Amherstburg (located where the Detroit River flows into the lake), and Pelee Island (an island municipality and the southernmost populated community in Canada).
